Saturday 22nd November. 11 - 4.
Poetry South.
The Haiku and the Small Poem.
Matthew Paul & John Barlow.
11 am - 4 pm at Brighton Writers' Centre. Price £40 or £30 Concessionary rates and Friends of THE SOUTH
The workshop will explore various ways of writing haiku in English, with a particular focus on experiential and creative approaches. Techniques such as 'cutting', juxtaposition, rhythm and musicality will be discussed, along with the relevance of 'season words' and the importance of image over ideas.
This engaging workshop will feature several group activities, and there will be the opportunity to take part in a haiku-writing walk (weather permitting). Participants will be encouraged to write haiku on the day, and there will be the opportunity to discuss these, or haiku you may already have written, both in a group context and/or one-to-one with the poets. Whilst concentrating on haiku, the workshop will also touch upon related forms such as tanka and haibun. Led by award-winning poets John Barlow and Matthew Paul, the workshop is suitable for all - from those completely new to haiku to more experienced writers.
John Barlow has been described as 'one of the world's most respected and best loved writers of haiku' (3LIGHTS). He is the editor of The Haiku Calendar, which has appeared annually since 2000, and co-editor of The New Haiku (2002). His haiku and tanka have received awards in the United Kingdom, United States, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and Japan, while works he has edited have been honoured by the Haiku Society of America and
the Poetry Society of America. His latest book, Wing Beats: British Birds in Haiku, written and compiled with Matthew Paul, was published by Snapshot Press in 2008.
Matthew Paul has contributed haiku to journals in the United Kingdom and the United States for more than fifteen years, and many of these appear in his collection The Regulars (Snapshot Press, 2008). He is the reviews editor for Presence haiku magazine, has a poetry blog at matthewpaulpoems.blogspot.com and lives and works in London.
