Catherine Smith was chosen as one of the 'Next Generation' poets of 2004 by the PBS/Arts Council. Her first full collection, The Butcher's Hands (Smith/Doorstop), was a PBS recommendation.This new collection, Lip(also Smith/Doorstop) will be published in November and a collection of her short stories will be published by Bluechrome next year.
'New direction....I'm quite concerned with time, and how slippery it is. And how memory can be at the same time accurate and an illusion. Quite a few references to roads, or railways, in recent poems; I rather like motorways - the way they act like arteries, linking different bits of the body. Service stations are very strange and hopefulplaces for me; I once had a major personal epiphany - almost a 'Damascine moment' - at Clackett Lane on the M25. Every time I go back there I hope for another similarly enlightening experience, but it's never happened since.'
