THE POETS' FAIR

The Poets’ Fair will showcase and celebrate all things poetic, including poetry organisations, presses large and small, magazines, performers, events, groups and poetry writing courses.

There will be workshops and discussions and plenty of opportunity for networking and making new contacts.

Discussion on the issues facing poetry translators with examples of work read by the translators Iztok Osojnik (Slovenia), Maria Jastrzebska, Sasha Dugdale (tbc), Chair John O’Donoghue.

               Workshop A - Dub Poetry with Kukomo Noxid
Learn the art of dub with an expert.
               
               Workshop B - The Poet's Notebook with Brendan Cleary

Brendan Cleary is a highly respected poet and teacher. This workshop is based on Brendan’s no-nonsense, practical approach to help people improve their poetry through group discussion and appraisal.
               
               Workshop C - Perform Your Poem - Jack Elliott's Five Step Plan
Jack Elliott is a scriptwriter, actor and teacher of writing skills. Last year, in collaboration with THE SOUTH, he developed a one-day course to help writers deliver their work in public. This is an abbreviated version of that course, focusing on tips and techniques to achieve the best possible performance.

Time to browse the stalls and exhibits and network with promoters, poets, editors.

              Penned in – the life of the poetry promoter
Talk by Tom Chivers, Penned in the Margins with questions.

Tom Chivers
founded Penned in the Margins in 2004 as a grassroots poetry night in South London. He left his 'proper job' two years later to work full-time as a poetry activist. He is Associate Editor of international literary journal Tears in the Fence, was a regular presenter on Resonance FM and his first collection London Pride, Mother's Ruin is forthcoming in 2008. He is the recipient of a recent Arts Council bursary.

               Workshop D -
Queer writing workshop with Chroma and Queer Writing South. Writing the Issues:
A Practical Creative Writing Workshop with the Editors of Chroma. Through exercises and discussion, you'll be encouraged to write poems or stories inspired by the themes of forthcoming issues (Pose, America, Body). This is also an opportunity to find out what kind of work the editors are looking for.

               Workshop E - Writing Brighton with John O’Donoghue
Brighton has long held literary associations. From Jane Austen and Aubrey Beardsley to Graham Greene and Patrick Hamilton, the strange magic of Brighton has captivated a wide variety of writers. In workshop John O'Donoghue will take you on a guided tour of the streets and beaches of Brighton in the company of poets who have made the town their home.

               Workshop F - Getting Published with Les Robinson (tall-lighthouse)
Simple tips and advice on getting your poetry published from a leading publisher.
