John O'Donoghue
John O'Donoghue will be reading from his latest work, Brunch Poems. Inspired by Frank O'Hara's Lunch Poems, ostensibly about New York's mid-century mid-day, with all of the hustle, bustle & muscle of Gotham on the move, Brunch Poems celebrates Brighton at the weekend -dirty, lazy, luxuriant, deadly. Come along and do 'Brunch' with Brighton's very own gossip in whom the gods confide.
John O'Donoghue has lived in Brighton for the past ten years. He Chairs Survivors Poetry, a funded organisation which to exists to publish and promote the work of people who have suffered mental distress. Currently working on a PhD in Creative Writing at Bath Spa.
Naomi Foyle
Brighton based performance poet. Her latest publication, Red Hot and Bothered (Lansdowne Press 2003), is a sharp and gently perverse exploration of sex, politics and death. She has also been published in magazines such as Ambit and on the internet.
Vince Laws
For the last 5 years Vince has been deputy editor of Brighton's Gscene magazine, while working on his own poetry and prose.
His self-published pamphlet of poetry, 'Beckham By the Balls', was launched in June 2004. Brighton based critic, Simon Clayton, wrote in The Latest, 'Laws is a technically adept poet capable of putting cunning linguistic threads through their precisely phrased paces. Check it out.'
Vince attended a poetry course under the guidance of Brighton-based poet Ros Barber, whose report included the following comments: 'Crash', as you know, is one of my favourites. Undoubtedly brutal, but with some brilliant lines. I particularly liked the visceral "Forcing French verbs into me until I vomited them up on the garage floor". Disturbing. 'Lilly Livered' is full-throated and great fun. 'Up Broken' is an interesting puzzle that grows on the reader/listener after initial confusion - both fun and bitter.
As part of his quest to put poetry in front of people who probably wouldn't buy a poetry book, 14 of the poems from 'Beckham By the Balls' were enlarged to A1 size and hung in Dr Brighton's pub - (not known for its literary interest!). Vince also gave his first public reading there, and the month long exhibition was extended to two after the positive response. Vince then took part in 'Poet Idol' (don't laugh!) in Brighton, and was thrilled not to win! He came third.
Vince has collaborated with digital film-maker David Fray, and has had 5 poems made into short films - available soon on DVD. Vince is currently working with artist, Lez Ingham, on an exhibition based on the theme 'Angels & Warriors' which will open in New York in 2005. All that and he's currently working on a 21st century version of the Faust legend, which mixes poetry, prose and projected photography.
Kay Sexton
She is a Jerry Jazz Fiction Award winner, with a column at www.moondance.org and another at www.facsimilation.com. Her short-short story "Domestic Violence" made the final five of the Guardian fiction contest, "Beltane and Samhain" placed third in the Bookjobber.com Science Fiction Contest, and her work appeared in five anthologies in Open mike.
