JACKIE WILLS / YANG LIAN / CATHERINE SMITH

Yang Lian was born in Switzerland, the son of a diplomat, and grew up in Beijing. He began writing when he was sent to the countryside in the 1970s, and on his return co-founded the inşuential literary magazine Jintian (Today - now published in exile in Scandinavia). His work was criticised officially in China in 1983 and then banned in 1989 when he organised memorial services for the dead of Tiananmen while in New Zealand. After spells in Australia, Germany and the USA, he has now settled in London. His previous collection, Where the Sea Stands Still (Bloodaxe Books, 1999), was a Poetry Book Society Recommended Translation.

Catherine Smith writes poetry and short fiction. Her poems have appeared in Soundings, Scriptor and The Wide Skirt. She won first prize in the Robin Lee Poetry Competition 1999 and had had two short stories broadcast on BBC Radio 4. Her poetry collection The New Bride was shortlisted for the Forward prize for Best First Collection 2001.
