THE ARTS COUNCIL FREE READ SCHEME
THE LITERACY CONSULTANCY BURSARIES

As members of the National Association for Literature Development, THE SOUTH were invited to join The Literacy Consultancy Bursaries Scheme in 2003. The scheme offers writers free access to The Literacy Consultancy's manuscript reading service - 'an honest, market-informed editorial appraisal by professional editors for those writing in any level in the English language at any stage of development'.

What's on offer?
TLC offers detailed editorial feedback and, where appropriate, seeks to place writers with agents and publishers. The bursaries are open to writers who would be unable to afford TLC's usual rates, and who would benefit from the TLC service. The service covers:

  • Short reads: a synopsis and 50 double-spaced pages, or 10-12 poems
  • Full length manuscripts: up to 300 double-spaced pages, a full collection of poetry

In 2003-04 we focussed on long fiction and a number of writers received detailed feedback on their work.

This year we are focussing on short stories.
