THE SOUTH is delighted to announce a special 10 week series of development workshops for poets with Brendan Cleary starting on Tuesday May 4 at 7pm upstairs at THE EARTH & STARS pub, top of Church Street, Brighton (5 minutes from Brighton Mainline Station).

The workshops will run weekly on Tuesday evenings from May 4 to July 6 2004 inclusive at 7-9pm - although Brendan usually allows at least an additional half hour for discussion. Brendan is happy for new members to join the group as the series progresses if you've been unable to attend the first sessions.

Because of Brendan's gentle, encouraging approach, the workshops are ideal for people just starting out on writing poetry as well as for more experienced poets. The classes will focus on topics such as inspiration, drafting, editing and the polishing and completion of work for submission to magazines and competitions. The approach will include writing exercises during the workshops as well as discussion of students' own work by the workshop group. Homework will also be set to be completed between each workshop. Students will be expected to complete a portfolio of eight poems by the end of the series.

The fee for the workshops will be £80 (£50) per person for the ten sessions. Unfortunately because of other commitments Brendan is not able to run the workshops on a drop in basis so commitment to the series is essential.
