Brighton Poetry Festival returns for its fourth year with a fantastic range of events and activities at venues around the city.
This year the festival is truly international with readings by acclaimed Indian poet Sudeep Sen, Ciaran O’Driscoll, Jo Slade and other poets from Limerick in Ireland, and Polish and Eastern European poets. There will be a tribute to the poetry of Samuel Beckett and the launch of the new publication Poetry South.
Latest Homes own Eminemmylou will host a special Open Mic Night at Joogleberry Playhouse on Tuesday October 2 featuring Hammer & Tongue poets. Other groups presenting their work include Poets at Midnight, Wordwise, Floetics, Poets Cornered and Wordplay.
On National Poetry Day Thursday October 4 there will be a special festival event at the Komedia Studio Bar featuring Tall Lighthouse and Neil Rollinson. The winner of the Limerick Poetry Slam will also perform.
Across Brighton poetry groups and publishers large and small are organising their own events as part of the festival. Queer Writing South and Chroma are hosting a special event at the Marlborough Theatre on Friday October 5.
The University of Brighton is supporting the festival again and the International Finale takes place at the Sallis Benney Theatre on Saturday October 6.
The Festival also features a major Poet’s Fair at the Sallis Benney during the day on Saturday October 6 where anyone interested in anything poetic can hear talks, get advice, find out about publishing, meet small presses and take part in workshops.
Tickets for all events will be available on the door or from THE SOUTH’s website in September. Friends of THE SOUTH receive a discount on all ticket prices.
Throughout the festival there will be free opportunities to hear all kinds of poetry presented at lunchtime and teatime at Joogleberry’s. The Festival Late Night Poetry Club will also be based at Joogleberry’s from 11pm. There will also be workshops, schools activities and informal get togethers to celebrate Brighton’s vibrant poetic personality – Europe’s most poetic city.
